Accessing Mounjaro

Posted on:

There have been announcements and news stories today (23rd June 2025) about Mounjaro (tirzepatide) being made available by the NHS through GP practices.

Unfortunately this is not currently the case in Kent and Medway.

In the first year (2025) of a phased three year roll-out access to tirzepatide will be available to those with the greatest clinical need which is those with a BMI of 40 or more (adjusted for ethnicity) and four of the five health conditions below:

· Type 2 diabetes

· High blood pressure

· Heart disease

· Obstructive sleep apnoea

· Abnormal blood fats

However, patients must also be referred on to a specialist diet and exercise support programme and we are informed by NHS Kent and Medway that no such programme has currently been commissioned in Kent and Medway.

Until such times as they make arrangements for such a programme, we have been informed that “it is not possible to prescribe tirzepatide (Mounjaro) in primary care” in Kent and Medway.
